The 17 Routs By the Triple Champions
This season, FC Barcelona’ve been outstanding for different reasons. The most important one, however, is goal scoring. In 62 official games, our boys hit the net 158 times.
83 of these goals were part of the team’s drubbing of rivals. In fact, there were 17 Liga, Copa del Rey, or Champions League matches in which the Blaugranas scored 4 or more goals, either at home or away.
11 of these heavy defeats over rivals corresponded to La Liga matches: Sporting Gijón (1-6), Atlético de Madrid (6-1), Almería (5-0), Málaga (1-4 y 6-0), Valladolid (6-0), Valencia (4-0), Deportivo (5-0), Numancia (4-1), Sevilla (4-0) and Real Madrid (2-6). 5 occurred in the Champions League, against Wisła Kraków (4-0), FC Basel (0-5), Sporting Clube (2-5), Olympique Lyonnais (5-2), and FC Bayern Munich (4-0). Only two of Barça’s rivals didn’t wind up with their nets riddled with holes, namely, Manchester United and FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Finally, there was only 1 in Copa del Rey, in the most important game: the finals against Athletic Bilbao (1-4).
The goal-scoring average for these 17 matches –against teams from all over Europe and in the best football venues, such as the Camp Nou, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, or the Mestalla stadium– was 4.88 goals/game.
The name behind the game is Josep Guardiola, his stamina and his boys. No matter what the scoreboard showed, they always wanted more. This philosophy of attack earned them 17 most sweet rewards.
